Abstract The paper deals with a book by Aleksey Martynyuk «Before Herberstein: Austria and Eastern Europe in the System of Personal Connections and Cultural Contacts (13th – Early 16th Century» (Moscow, 2019). Reviewer analyzes its main concepts and massages as well as evaluates some Martynyuk’s hypotheses. In reviewer’s opinion, despite some minor faults the book sufficiently contributes to our knowledge about intercultural and interconfessional communication between Eastern and Western Europe in the «dark» Middle Ages.
