Abstract
In the paper the explanation of the making of Slavic ethnicity proposed by Florin Curta is exposed to criticism. Author considers some Curta's conclusions to contradict to the information of Thephylact Symocatta. In author's opinion, there is unclear from Curta's book how could the Byzantines invent the Slavs and what was the mechanism of influence of this Constantinople armchair invention on the populetion of such a distant frontier region
